Tour of Member’s Job for Students at University
Before the Event
- Decide on a job site and a member who works there to lead the event
- Get prior approval from site leaders for students to be given a tour and select an available date/time
- Learn any restrictions or prior information needed
- Possible restrictions: no pictures or recordings, no minors, maximum number of people for the tour, maximum number of people in one room at a time, safety protocols
- Possible information needed: names of everyone attending N days in advance of tour
- Ask if would mind students contacting them after the event with questions and get a point of contact (POC) with email address
- Learn any restrictions or prior information needed
- Prepare a presentation about the job or facility, if desired, and/or offer the host site to give a presentation to the students about their company
- Decide if food is required and/or how much will charge students for attendance
- Publicize! Send eNotice, post meeting on vTools, post on social media, coordinate with student chapter or class
- Example event: Teamed with a local professor to give his class a tour of a facility (could also team with IEEE student chapter), visit control rooms and electronic maintenance labs (no powerpoint presentation needed), have lunch with students
At the Event
- Engage
- Ask the students their background in the technical areas applicable to the tour
- Provide easy to understand explanations of sites seen and prompt for questions
- Mention other events in the Section relevant to particular student interests
- Safety
- Ensure attendees follow all safety protocols for the site
After the Event
- Record attendance and meeting information in vTools
- Thank student chapter advisor or professor as well as tour leader for assistance
- Send follow-up to students
- Send short survey to students if desired, possibly including interest in other ideas for tours or events in your Section
- Provide contact information for job site POC if permission obtained
