Presentation at University’s IEEE Student Branch

Before the Event

  • Select a student branch to reach out to
  • Pick a date and venue for the talk. Determine A/V availability and constraints
  • If food desired, determine if provided by University or IEEE Section
  • Set price for event, but keep it low or free for students
  • Ask about parking and if there is a fee. Consider reimbursing speaker for parking
  • Choose a topic for the presentation after discussion with student branch coordinator and/or student branch mentor to determine key areas of student interest.
    • Example 1: How volunteering can power your career
    • Example 2: Building and leveraging your personal brand and network
    • Example 3: Transitioning from Student to Professional
  • Consider partnering with another engineering organization, such as the Society of Women Engineers
  • Make presentation (e.g., Powerpoint) and bring on flash drive or presenter’s laptop
  • Publicize! Send eNotice, post meeting on vTools, post on social media, coordinate with student chapter or class

At the Event

  • An hour before the event, provide speaker with a name tag and ensure all microphones working.
  • Half an hour before the event, open doors to event. Greet and provide name tags for attendees.
  • Introduce speaker briefly.
  • Conduct presentation. Leave enough time for questions.
  • Thank everyone for attending at the end of the session.

After the Event

  • Record attendance and meeting information in vTools
  • Thank student chapter advisor or professor as well as tour leader for assistance
  • Send short survey to students if desired, possibly including interest in other presentation topics
